To fully understand AI agents and their uses, one must know about the types of available agents and the environments they exist in. These led to many combinations in which agents can be used.
Types of AI Agents and Their Environments
AI agents are systems that perceive their environment and take actions to achieve a goal. But depending on how they interact with their environment and what capabilities they have, we can group them into different types. Here is a summary of the agents and their types.
1. Simple Reflex Agents
These are the most basic agents. They act based on the current situation, they have no history & no learning. They follow a simple “if, then” rule; if abc happens, then do xyz. For example, there is a room heater with a thermostat: if the room gets cold, turn on the heat. This is the “brain” of the agent. These agents are good enough for predictable environments, but they break easily when things change or get too complex.
2. Model-Based Reflex Agents
These agents maintain some internal state, a model of the world to track what’s going on. Instead of just reacting to the latest input, they use some memory of what happened before. This lets them handle partially observable environments. Still not very intelligent, but more flexible than simple reflex agents.
3. Goal-Based Agents
These agents can evaluate different actions based on a goal. They don’t just react or rely on past states, they reason. For example, if an AI robot wants to reach a destination, it’ll consider different paths and pick the best one (shortest distance, lowest weight). Having a goal makes them more useful in dynamic or unfamiliar environments.
4. Utility-Based Agents
These agents are some of the smartest ones, they don’t just aim for a goal, they also measure how good or bad each outcome is. That measurement is called utility. If a self-driving car has to choose between reaching on time and saving fuel, it’ll weigh both and pick the option with the highest utility based on its priorities. Useful when there are trade-offs or multiple ways to achieve a goal.
5. Learning Agents
These agents are the smartest, they can improve and evolve. They learn from past experiences and adjust their behavior. This includes learning from the environment, actions, or even redefining goals. Reinforcement learning agents come in this category, they take actions, get feedback, and use the feedback to improve. These are the kind of agents behind most modern AI systems that are adaptive and scalable.
Types of Environments
The kind of environments an agent lives in shapes how it works. Here are some basic ways we classify them.
Fully Observable vs. Partially Observable
If the agent can see everything it needs to make a decision, the environment is fully observable. If it has to guess or remember, it’s partially observable. Self-driving cars operate in a partially observable environment, they can’t see everything at once. Where as, a online shopping robot is in a fully observable environment as it can see all available items.
Deterministic vs. Stochastic
In deterministic environments, the outcome of an action is predictable. In stochastic ones, there’s some randomness. For example, a chessboard is deterministic, while the stock market is stochastic.
Episodic vs. Sequential
In episodic environments, decisions don’t depend on past ones. Each input is a new episode. On the other hand, in sequential environments, current actions affect future ones. Most real-world problems, like playing a game or driving, these are are sequential. But, image classification is episodic as each image is a new “episode”.
Static vs. Dynamic
Static environments don’t change while the agent is thinking, dynamic environments change. Turn-based games are static. Real-time systems like video surveillance are dynamic.
Discrete vs. Continuous
In discrete environments, time, actions, or percepts come in chunks. In continuous ones, they’re smooth and ongoing. A board game is discrete. Steering a car is continuous.
Known vs. Unknown
If the agent knows the rules,states, and possible actions of the environment, it’s known. If it has to learn or infer them, it’s unknown. For instance, a board game is known, but autonomous drone navigation is unkown.
Conclusion
Classifying agents and environments helps one understand what kind of AI we need for a task. Not all agents can handle all environments. A simple rule-based agent might work for a thermostat, but not for an autonomous drone. As the environment gets more complex, the agent needs more flexibility, memory, and learning ability. If you’re building or studying AI systems, understanding this match between agent and environment is a good starting point.
